Congratulations to Nicole Voiklis of the Graduate School, our Web Accessibility Partner of the Week for November 16th!
Focus on Web Accessibility
The Graduate School has a clear vision of what it wants to do with its Web site. Director of Graduate Studies, Joy Colwell and her staff have a clear understanding of their audience and they have been working with University Relations to better define their online approach.
Much of the responsibility for the Graduate School’s Web presence belongs to Nikki. So, when we stepped up our Web Accessibility project, Nikki recognized that it would be important for her to learn all she could in order to make sure that the Graduate School’s Web site is in compliance with the Web Accessibility Policy.
Nikki attended WordPress training sessions and Web Accessibility Awareness sessions to get up to speed. She has taken advantage of the Web Accessibility resources provided and whenever she has a question about how to handle something like a PDF or a video, she doesn’t hesitate to ask.
From PDF to Web Page
An example is the recent posting of the Graduate Students Path to Graduation, a flow chart / map outlining the steps that a graduate student takes from acceptance to the awarding of the degree. The PDF version is full of text boxes which can be difficult and time-consuming to tag and make accessible. Nikki contacted us for advice, and within an hour, she had an accessible Web page created, with a link to the PDF for those who might want to print a copy.
It’s Partners like Nikki Voiklis who are making our Web Accessibility efforts a success and who help assure that everyone has equivalent access to all Purdue Calumet Web sites!
Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, we will announce our Web Accessibility Partner of the Week on Wednesday, November 21st, rather than Friday. Stay tuned!
