The Trojans jumped out to big lead in the first set, going out in front, 17-9, on a kill by Chelsie Shields. However, Purdue Calumet would come to life, taking advantage of several TIU mistakes to pull within one, 21-20, by way of an 11-4 rally. Two kills by Brynne Eaton would help seal it for the Trojans though, as TIU scored the final four points of the set to grab a 1-0 advantage.
The Peregrines were unable to dig their way out of early holes in the final two sets, as TIU’s attack closed out the victory at PUC’s Fitness and Recreation Center.
Freshman Kiara McLaurin tallied three kills in the opening set on her way to a team-high five kills and a career-high.211 attack percentage. Junior Ashley Eaves added five kills as well to go along with a season-best four blocks.
Sophomore Maria Frebis also notched a season-high, recording 15 digs to go along with a personal-best two service aces. Julie Sipek led the squad with six assists, while fellow sophomore Savannah Hauter and freshman Carlie Crosbie each added three apiece.
Purdue Calumet will pick up play this Saturday, October 2, when it travels to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Kuyper College. First serve is set for 11 a.m. CST.
