Web Accessibility Update

One year and counting

BY PAMELA RIESMEYER
Web Accessibility Coordinator

One year from now, all Web pages on the Purdue Calumet site are to meet our Web Accessibility Policy guidelines.  For Web pages and documents numbering in the thousands, a year isn’t a lot of time, but the good news is that we continue to make great progress.

The latest audits of our sites show that, overall, we are at 80 percent compliance. That puts us ahead of our March 15, 2013 goal of 75 percent and on our way to 100 percent compliance by March 15, 2014. And we are seeing continued commitment and dedication to reaching that milestone from site owners and content editors.

Web and document workshops and training

We are working closely with departments and schools to provide training and support. We will hold a two- hour workshop just for editors on sites in the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Sciences Friday (3/8) and plan to reach out to other schools and departments for similar sessions.

We have located a lab classroom that will allow us to provide hands-on training for creating accessible documents including PDFs and PowerPoint presentations. That training will start later this spring, and we will post times, dates and location soon on the Web Accessibility site. The workshops will be open to everyone, not just Web editors. Learning how to make sure that a document meets accessibility guidelines is a useful and increasingly important marketable skill.

Web Accessibility Partners

Our Web Accessibility Partners consist of Purdue Calumet departments or individuals who have done outstanding work in bringing a Web site into compliance, or who contribute to our efforts by showing special interest or asking especially good questions about how to make a site or a document accessible.
