Vast offerings from Resource Center

by DEBBIE BEAL
Manager, Academic Resource Center

The Purdue University Calumet Center for Student Achievement (CSA) promotes student success and offers an array of services for academic improvement. A key unit of the CSA is the Academic Resource Center (ARC).

Located in Gyte 102, the ARC offers free workshops, peer-assisted Open Lab Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction (S. I.).

S. I. Includes review sessions where students compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and predict test items. The sessions are facilitated by, “S. I. Leaders”, students who previously have done well in the course.

Open Lab Tutoring allows students an opportunity for assistance six days a week in all major subjects. Extended tutoring hours are available. The ARC also recommends private tutoring through their Community Tutoring program.

One misconception by students is that the services provided by ARC are remedial in nature – which is incorrect. Many of Purdue Calumet’s brightest and most successful students gain an advantage through tutoring and S. I.

I encourage students to get academic assistance as soon as they realize they are having difficulty with a class. The most common mistake they make is not coming in early enough for help.

In addition to their primary academic support services, ARC will be providing a series of Success Workshops. These sessions will support students in clearing some of the academic hurdles associated with student life at Purdue Calumet.

The ARC also co-sponsors book discussions and events for the One Book/One University common reader program.

It you are an excellent student and enjoy helping people, I encourage you to join the ARC team by applying for one of their many positions.  Tutors and S. I. Leaders are prestigious job opportunities that offer competitive pay and flexible hours.
