Thursday’s (8/22) Student Convocation is for faculty & staff, too!

In festive fashion, faculty and staff are invited to welcome students—new and returning—to Purdue Calumet’s community of scholars Thursday (8/22).

The annual Student Convocation and celebration is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. outdoors in the center of campus, beginning with the traditional faculty and staff procession to Founders Plaza. Remarks by Chancellor Keon will follow, as will a panel discussion of faculty and returning students sharing experiences and insights about succeeding at Purdue Calumet.

Opportunity for faculty, staff & students to interact

The event also features Information tables, a campus resource fair and picnic food. But most importantly, the symbolic welcome to the new academic year provides an informal opportunity for students, faculty and staff to interact with one another in a relaxed environment.

Developing an atmosphere of campus community is the primary objective of the Student Convocation celebration, according to Debbie Bachman, assistant director of Purdue Calumet Campus Life.

Easing student anxiety

Since its genesis in 2008, the celebration has served to help ease the anxiety new students—and even returning students— may have at the start of a new academic year. Faculty and staff can play a large role in that process.

Chairing this year’s Student Convocation committee is Sarah Howard, interim vice chancellor of Information Services. Bachman and Office of Campus Life staff member Amanda Kahle are co-chairs. Their mission: a day of enjoyment and engagement for the Purdue Calumet community of scholars.
