Social Media Club debuts
When students in Purdue Calumet’s Marketing 421 course proposed the idea of offering a Social Media club on campus, the idea blossomed. Visiting Instructor Matt Hanson assisted in putting the wheels in motion.
Establishing a base
Hanson knew this concept would be beneficial in many ways.
“Since social media knowledge is one of the top needs sought by businesses today, I felt this would be a good opportunity to get students involved from a business side, not simply a personal side,” he said.
Moving forward toward goals
Progress for the new group is slow, but steady. Hanson added that he would like to develop a few teams that are fully integrated into the social media marketing teams of some local businesses. He has been in discussions with a few potential clients already and things are looking promising.
Meetings are casual
The Social Media Club meets bi-monthly at 5 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays in Anderson 311. Purdue Calumet students and staff are invited to attend the sessions, which last approximately one hour. On the agenda are discussions regarding new developments in individual goals, the latest news about social platforms and development plans for the club.
Club’s future looks exciting
Although growth of the new Social Media Club is gradual, all involved are optimistic as to the future importance of such an endeavor.
“Give us some time, and we’ll establish something that will give the students some real experience to put on their resumes,” Hanson said. “We’ve already had one success story with Discoveries Unlimited. We fully integrated their mentee/mentor applications into Facebook and rebranded both Facebook and Twitter.
