While our Peregrines women’s and men’s basketball players performed to the best of their abilities on the court this season, these student-athletes also are reaching out impressively into the classrooms of three Hammond elementary schools to advance literacy.

Women’s squad members visited fourth and fifth grade classes at Maywood, Morton and Harding Schools Jan. 20 and Feb. 17 as part of our R-Dub Club partnership with the School City of Hammond. Men’s players will visit March 23 and April 20.

During each 45-minute visit of the R-Dub Club—(“R” for reading and “Dub,” short for the letter W representing writing)—one of our student-athletes introduces a grade level-appropriate novel. He/she does so by reading the first two chapters as the elementary students following along via loaned copies provided by the university.

Another PUC student-athlete then engages the younger students in a Q&A discussion of what was read. During the final component of each visit, the younger students interview our student-athletes for a writing assignment of their teacher’s choosing.

Each classroom of students finishes reading their book in time for the next R-Dub Club visit, when a different novel is introduced.
