Athletics and Partnerships

Groundbreaking for athletics complex at Dowling Park is Dec. 9

An outdoor home for Purdue Calumet sports teams will become a reality next August at nearby Dowling Park.

Groundbreaking for the long anticipated, multi-sport athletics complex will take place at 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 9, including a reception inside the Jean Shepherd Center at the south end of the park, adjacent to the construction site. The campus community is invited to attend.

Partnering with city of Hammond

Development of the complex is part of a wide-ranging partnership between Purdue Calumet and the city of Hammond, whose mayor, Thomas McDermott, Jr., is a Purdue Calumet alumnus. That partnership also relates to university plans for developing commercialization and manufacturing centers, as well as engaging with the downtown Towle Theater in cultural activities.

Construction of the athletics complex will be in two phases—the first producing soccer, baseball and softball fields for university use late next summer. Phase two features development of six tennis courts and a plaza to include restrooms, concessions/refreshments area, athletic training facility, service and utility buildings, and a walking path.

200 student-athletes

Purdue Calumet teams will have priority use of the fields and courts during their respective seasons; city residents and teams also will have access.

Dowling Park will be home to university men’s and women’s soccer, men’s baseball, women’s softball, and men’s and women’s tennis squads. Purdue Calumet’s recent expansion to 12 sports programs has produced some 200 enrolled student athletes who have compiled a collective grade point average that exceeds 3.0. The women’s basketball team’s march to the NAIA Division II national tournament last March produced significant campus pride and university attention throughout our region.

Dowling Park is located in Hammond’s Hessville neighborhood, a mile southeast of campus, east of Kennedy Avenue and just north of Interstate 80-94.
