New, cutting edge master’s program debuts
An innovative, new Purdue Calumet master’s degree program, introduced this spring, is designed to enable students to apply advanced technology to solve real world problems.
The interdisciplinary Master of Science in Modeling, Simulation and Visualization is a first among Indiana colleges and universities. Students will develop skills and expertise essential to engineers, technologists, business intelligence developers, software consultants and computer scientists, among others.
Reflects the future
“This (degree) is a wonderful, exciting opportunity for graduate students,” said Chenn Zhou, interim associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate studies and professor of Mechanical Engineering. “It reflects the future.”
Zhou added that there is a global challenge involved in education. “I believe it is essential to offer, through this program, ways to provide innovative solutions to meet these global challenges,” she said. “This new degree will definitely help those in both the high-tech and traditional work force.”
A boost to economic development
University officials believe that an educated work force able to apply advanced technology to solve current and emerging industrial problems, can be a boost to economic development in northwest Indiana, as well as attract more high-tech companies to this region.
The advanced facilities and expertise of the campus’ Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS) are available for students enrolled in the program. CIVS provides state-of-the-art modeling and simulation technologies, combined with 3D visualization and virtual reality.
Integrating technologies to solve problems
“We offer 21st century technologies and integrate them to solve real world problems with unlimited applications in many fields, such as construction, engineering, education, training, economic development, energy, environment, health care, marketing, manufacturing, safety, science, service, transportation and technology.” Zhou added.
The degree program was approved last year by the Commission for Higher Education. Purdue Calumet now offers 14 master’s degree programs. A 10-member committee worked on the curriculum, receiving endorsement of Purdue West Lafayette administration.
