Faculty named Certified Six Sigma Black Belt

Purdue Calumet Professor of Industrial Engineering Technology and Glenview, IL resident Lash Mapa has earned an American Society for Quality Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (ASQ-CSSBB).

Six Sigma is an organized methodology that utilizes information and statistical analysis to measure and improve an enterprise’s operational performance, practices and systems.

A Back Belt demonstrates team leadership and team dynamics in all aspects of the DMAIC model, (representing define, measure, analyze, improve and control.)

“We have been teaching Six Sigma methodologies for a few years now,” Mapa said. “Many of our students have successfully gained Green Belt certification, and two have gotten Black Belt certification within the past three years. This will add credibility to our programs in the School of Technology.”

Purdue Calumet School of Technology faculty members have mentored more than 50 Six Sigma projects during the past five years, with many graduates having gained employment in this field.

A Purdue Calumet faculty member since 1987, Mapa holds a baccalaureate degree from England’s Birkenhead College and a doctorate from the University of Manchester.

More information about the ASQ-CSSBB can be obtained by visiting or contacting Prof. Mapa at or 219/989-2574.
