Safety student receives $5,250 scholarship & all expense-paid trip to conference

A Purdue University Calumet student and Hammond resident has received a $5,250 scholarship to advance her study of safety.

Nicole Hanas, who is double majoring in safety, health and environmental management within the university’s Organizational Leadership and Supervision program, as well as criminal justice, was awarded the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) David Iden Memorial Safety Scholarship. With the scholarship, she receives an expense-paid trip to the Safety 2010 Conference June 13-16 in Baltimore, Maryland.

UPS sponsors the scholarship through the ASSE Foundation.

“It is an honor to receive this award from the oldest and largest professional safety organization,” she said. “This scholarship provides me with an opportunity to continue my education and pursue a degree in the safety field.”

As a scholarship recipient, Hanas will be featured in an upcoming issue of the ASSE Journal, Professional Safety.

Safety, Health and Environmental Management is one of three baccalaureate degree majors within Purdue Calumet’s Organizational Leadership and Supervision program. The safety major program provides necessary knowledge and background for graduates to work in various safety-related positions. Courses provide up-to-date technical information covering the most important areas of safety.
