Initiative Component – Grades 6-8

The Initiative Component is designed to motivate and encourage middle and junior high school participants to excel at a maximum academic level to ensure proper readiness for secondary school. Participants have the option of attenRailcatsding workshops related to academic preparation, mentoring, parental support, college planning, leadership development, community service, etc. 

Career Exploration

Career Exploration activities are planned throughout the year to encourage and reinforce the importance of implementing an early career guidance awareness program. Participants are provided assessments that gauge personality and social interests so that they can gain a better understanding of themselves as it relates to occupational choice.

Day on Campus

Day on Campus is held bi-annually usually during the month of May.  Participants attend classes, attend motivational seminars and get a firsthand glimpse of life as a college student.  An awards presentation and keynote speaker culminate this event.

Educational/Cultural Field Experiences

Educational field experiences are planned throughout the academic school year. These field experiences are designed to highlight an array of institutions, professions, and occupations and allows the participant to be exposed to educational institution networks and hpim1442.JPGdevelop professional/mentor relationships.

Project EXCEL Summer Enrichment

A summer enrichment program that is designed to enhance reading, mathematical, and technology skills. Those selected will participate in interactive classes in mathematics, science, computer applications, and/or language arts; go on field trips that are both educational and fun; experience an opportunity to talk with successful persons representing many career fields; and be recognized for academic and social achievements. EXCEL is generally held in July on the campus of Purdue University Calumet.
