‘living’ at Purdue Calumet
Thirty junior high and middle school students from Hammond, East Chicago and Calumet Township are gaining insights about STEM-related academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while experiencing a taste of college residential life.
Purdue University Calumet’s Educational Talent Search program is hosting Project Excel, a two-week academic enrichment program through Friday, Aug. 2. The program features project-based learning activities, classroom experiences, speakers, field trips and campus fun.
“Through a variety of exciting learning experiences and activities, Project Excel is designed to make learning fun and inspiring, while motivating young students to consider study and careers in STEM-related fields,” Purdue Calumet Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Roy Hamilton said.
Innovative to Project Excel are opportunities July 29-31 for the students to design and develop their own scalable computing games during afternoon sessions.
Additionally, the students will reside on campus during the second week of the program (July 28-Aug. 2) in the university’s student housing facility, Peregrine Hall. Meals also will be served to the students.
Throughout the program, the students will learn about mechanical engineering, basic electricity, mechanics, digital electronics and computer design. Exploring related career opportunities and engaging in intensive writing also are part of Project Excel, as are field trips to the Purdue University Discovery Park research center at West Lafayette and the Challenger Space Center at Purdue Calumet.
Educational Talent Search Program
This summer’s Project Excel program is limited to participants of Purdue Calumet’s Educational Talent Search Program, which assists and encourages capable individuals from first generation college and low income backgrounds to gain a postsecondary education.
Weekday sessions begin at 8 a.m. with breakfast. Fitness activities and movies also are part of the experience.
