Shadow of Cortes 4/26

Purdue Calumet hosts ‘In the Shadow of Cortés’
movie/discussion at Towle April 26

As a finale to the campus photography exhibit, “In the Shadow of Cortés,” Purdue University Calumet will present the film, “The Other Conquest”, including a post-film discussion Friday, April 26 at the downtown Towle Theater.

Admission is free

The event begins with a 5 p.m. hors d’oeuvres reception, followed by the film presentation at approximately 5:45 p.m. Community members are invited to attend. Admission is free.

“The Other Conquest” is a drama about the after-effects of the devastating 1520s Spanish Conquest of Mexico and the Aztec Empire, led by Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortés and his army. Film director Salvador Carrasco will be present and offer remarks before the film, as will Purdue Calumet Chancellor Thomas L. Keon. The 16th century invasion incited some of the most profound cultural, political and civilizational changes in history.

Related photography exhibit

The related photography exhibit, concluding on the Purdue Calumet campus April 30, provides contemporary perspective about the impact Cortés and his army had on Mexico by focusing on a single, historical 21st century route across the nation’s central region.

The film showing is offered by the university’s School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and is the first event Purdue Calumet has hosted at the downtown Towle venue since the university, theater and city of Hammond began discussing partnership opportunities several months ago.
