Founders Day Celebration

Purdue Calumet celebrates Founders Day Monday (2/25)

It was 67 years ago to the day when Purdue University initiated credit courses in the Hammond area. Classes held at rented facilities went on to spur site development of a permanent Purdue campus in Hammond.

Those momentous events and the visionary individuals who played key roles in the establishment of Purdue University Calumet—campus founders, as they have come to be recognized over the years—provide inspiration for Monday’s (2/25) celebration of Founders Day at Purdue Calumet.

Campus celebration

The campus celebration will feature a myriad of campus activities, beginning with a 10 a.m. kickoff in Calumet Falls of the Student Union & Library. There also will be games, refreshments, a spirit parade around campus and a fireworks finale.

The Purdue Calumet Fitness Center, located in the Fitness & Recreation Center at the south end of campus, will be open free of charge throughout the day. Faculty, staff and students also have been participating in a Campus Spirit Decorating Contest within their units.

Following the 3:45 p.m. spirit parade, there will be a short presentation, complete with birthday cake, in the Student Union & Library’s Alumni Hall. The 6 p.m. fireworks display will close the celebration.

Intramurals 60th anniversary

University Associate Director of Advancement/Events Coordinator Sheryl Corey and Assistant Athletic Director/Director of Intramurals Matt Dudzik have served as co-chairs of a campus planning committee for the event. Research Dudzik conducted about the history of Purdue Calumet intramurals, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary throughout the 2012-13 academic year, proved helpful in Founders Day planning.

“Our goal is to bring the campus together to celebrate its past, present and bright future,” Dudzik said. “This (event) demonstrates what an important part of the community Purdue Calumet is and what it has meant to so many lives throughout the years, as well as its impact in the years to come.”

Special exhibit

Additionally, Purdue Calumet’s Archives and Special Collections Office has installed a “Walk Thru History of Purdue University Calumet” display, located on the third floor of the Student Union & Library. The exhibit continues through March 1.
