100% licensure pass rate for grads of
Purdue Calumet Ed. Administration online program
All 24 graduates of the first cohort class of Purdue University Calumet’s Master of Science in Education and Licensure in Educational Administration online program have passed the 2011-12 School Leaders Licensure Assessment Exam.
A passing mark on the national exam is required by the state of Indiana and numerous other states for educators to gain licensure as a K-12 grade level principals or vice principals.
Purdue Calumet’s 31-credit hour program prepares educators for the exam. Migrated two years ago to a completely online format, the program includes more rigorous course projects.
“Now, K-12 students all over the country, not just in northwest Indiana, will benefit from having school principals who have up-to-date and effective administrative skills,” Interim Head of Purdue Calumet’s Department of Graduate Studies in Education and Professor of Education Lynn Zimmerman said.
24 students in first cohort
Comprising the first online cohort class were 24 students, including six outside Indiana.
“At about the same time we migrated to our online format, the national exam was revised to be much more rigorous,” Purdue Calumet Chair of Educational Administration and Associate Professor of Education Pam Frampton said. “It is especially gratifying that our first online cohort class passed the exam at a 100 percent rate. We attribute this success to our efforts to add more rigorous projects to our courses that require students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in elements tested on the exam.”
For example, each cohort class member was required to complete an action research project, including data tables and analysis, indicating how student achievement can be increased.
Fifteen more groups enrolled
Fifteen other cohort groups continue to be enrolled in the program. The next School Leaders Licensure Assessment Exam is scheduled this spring.
Faculty and other stakeholders in the Purdue Calumet Educational Administration Program use licensure exam data to monitor how well candidates perform in content knowledge measured in the exam.
