Purdue Calumet celebrates 2012 Chinese New Year

Purdue University Calumet celebrates the 2012 Chinese New Year, Saturday, Feb. 4.

Festivities begin at 1:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall of the Student Union & Library. They include a musical performance, games, karaoke and an authentic Chinese meal. The performance includes traditional and modern customs from both eastern and western cultures, performed by students and invited professional performers.

The Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival, is the most important holiday in China, where celebrations continue for up to two weeks. It is a celebration of happiness.

“The Chinese New Year celebration is a fun, cultural and educational event,” Purdue Calumet Chinese Student Association member Yang Wang said.

Seats are limited and tickets are available in advance on a first-come, first served basis. Ticket prices are $7 for students, $10 for non-students and $5 for children ages 5-12. Children younger than 5 will be admitted at no charge. If tickets remain available, they will go on sale at the event for $15.

The Purdue Calumet celebration is sponsored by the university’s Chinese Student Association, Office of Student Activities, Student Government Association, Multi-Cultural Campus Council, International Programs Office and the Northwest Indiana Chinese School/Chinese Network.

The actual Chinese New Year’s day falls on Jan 23, but because of the time difference, the actual ringing in, locally, of the new year is 10 a.m., Sunday (1/22).

The Chinese Student Association and the Purdue Calumet Office of Student Housing are collaborating on a television viewing on campus of the Chinese New Year’s observance Sunday (1/22), from 6 a.m. until noon in Room 334 of the student housing facility, University Village 2.

Purdue Calumet’s Student Union & Library is located one-third mile north of Interstate 80/94, three blocks east of Indianapolis Boulevard, north of the traffic light on 173rd Street. More information can be obtained, and ticket reservations can be made by contacting Purdue Calumet Administrative Assistant Linda Robinson at 219/989-2765 or linda.robinson@purduecal.edu.
