University Village Hall Council of PUC wins national award

Purdue University Calumet received a national award for Building Residence Hall Association of the Year at the 2011 conference for the National Association of College and University Residence Halls, Inc. (NACURH).

University Village Hall Council (UVHC) is the Residence Hall Association (RHA) of Purdue Calumet whose primary purposes are to represent University Village residents in all aspects of campus life, create opportunities for students to interact, provide leadership for change in accordance with the goals of the Department of Housing and Residential Education, seek solutions to problems facing residents, and act as a central government for University Village residents.

Delegates from Purdue Calumet attended the NACURH 2011 Conference where over 270 universities/institutions were represented. Attending from Purdue Calumet was UVHC President Na-Jee Harris, Vice President Eric Giboyeaux, National Communications Coordinator Yasemine Garmon, Director of Finance Asad Khan, Director of Programming & Diversity Ryan Harris and UVHC Advisor and Interim Director of Housing and Residential Education Abbas Hill. All are current residents of University Village in Hammond.

“I am thrilled that UVHC was recognized nationally by their peers from over 270 colleges and universities,” Hill said. “It speaks volumes about how much they contribute to the University Village community and the campus at large.”

In April, UVHC submitted their bid for the Building RHA of the Year Award for national consideration on behalf of Purdue Calumet. The Building RHA of the Year Award was created to recognize those RHAs that have made significant strides in the development of their RHA. The award is designed to honor the RHA, which displays tremendous effort and improvement in their residence hall environment. This was UVHC’s very first bid for any award for NACURH and it was presented to the Purdue Calumet representatives at the conference’s closing ceremony.

In addition to the Residence Hall Association of the Year award, Na-Jee Harris and Hill both received conference pins. Na-Jee Harris received the NACURH 2011 Conference Pin for his passion for student leadership, dedication to his RHA, and for being an inspiring student leader. Hill received the Silver Pin Award for his continued support of his student leaders, establishing a National Residence Hall Honorary Chapter at Purdue Calumet, and encouraging his students to grow and develop.

Since the restructure of the organization in the summer of 2009 by Hill and Harris, more than 21 student leadership opportunities are now offered, giving residents a venue to develop their leadership skills and serve their community. To date, UVHC has accomplished the following:

• Planned and Implemented Welcome Weekend 2010 for UV residents (a full weekend of fun socials/activities, sports, and competitions)

• Planned and implemented nearly 100 programs/events, fundraisers, and community service efforts for University Village residents

• Donated 436 pounds of food to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana

• Donated 60 large bags of clothes to the Salvation Army

• Received the 2009-2010 Student Organization of the Year: A.C.E. (Activities, Community Service, and Excellence) Award

• Attended four regional Great Lakes Association of College and University Residence Hall Conferences

• Won five Regional of the Month Awards (OTMs)

• Produced and distributed six UVHC Quarterly Newsletters since Spring 2010

UVHC is extremely proud to represent the residence hall system of Purdue Calumet. They are more eager than ever to provide continued and increased services and opportunities to the residents of the University Village community.

“I feel honored to be the advisor for such an amazing organization,” Hill added. “The students I work with and support are truly amazing individuals who teach me new lessons during each encounter and I am honored to celebrate this accomplishment with them.”
