Purdue University Calumet will celebrate homecoming, Saturday, Feb. 21.The event features two basketball games, the traditional crowning of queen and king of the student body and presentation of the Bob Hayes Athletic Alumni Award-all to be held in the gym of the Physical Education Recreation Building. The celebration also includes an alumni reception at 6 p.m. and a student dance at 9 p.m., both to be held at The Center.
The Purdue Calumet women’s varsity team takes on Indiana University South Bend at 4 p.m. The Purdue Calumet vs. Indiana University South Bend men’s varsity basketball game is at 7 p.m.
Before tip-off of the men’s game, the 19th annual Bob Hayes Athletic Alumni Award will be presented to Tony Garvey, a 1986 Purdue Calumet graduate in accounting who played for the Purdue Calumet Lakers, 1982-86. He is a member of the 1,000 Point Club, received All District Honorable Mention (1984-85), was named All District First Team (1985-86) and is the seventh-ranked scorer and No. 3 rebounder in Purdue Calumet men’s basketball history. A Dyer resident, Garvey is employed by the Internal Revenue Service.
The alumni reception, sponsored by the Purdue Alumni Association-Calumet, will feature hors d’oeuvres and a free gift for attendees. Also, participants will have an opportunity to win two basketballs: one autographed by Purdue Men’s Head Basketball Coach Gene Keady and one autographed by Purdue Women’s Head Basketball Coach Kristy Curry. During half time of the men’s game, queen and king candidates will be introduced. The queen and king will be crowned at the homecoming dance.
