Former Purdue University Calumet basketball standout Tony Garvey will receive the Purdue Alumni Association-Calumet’s Bob Hayes Athletic Alumni Award during Purdue University Calumet homecoming festivities, Saturday (2/21).
Garvey, a Dyer resident and 1986 Purdue Calumet graduate, will be presented the award prior to the 7 p.m. start of the Purdue Calumet vs. Indiana University-South Bend men’s basketball game in the Physical Education Recreation Building on campus. The Purdue Alumni Association-Calumet presents the award annually to a Purdue Calumet former athlete or other graduate who has distinguished himself/herself in sports/athletics or another field following his/her Lakers’ playing days.
Garvey earned a baccalaureate degree in management-accounting. He is employed by the Internal Revenue Service. As a 6-foot-6 forward he played on Lakers squads from 1982-86 and earned All-District and NAIA honorable mention All-America recognition during the ’85-86 season. He is a member of the Purdue Calumet 1,000 Point Club and is the seventh leading scorer and No. 3 rebounder in Lakers history.
The award is named after the retired Purdue Calumet coach, athletic director, faculty member and statistician, who served the university and its athletic department for 37 years.
The homecoming day celebration begins at 4 p.m. when the Purdue Calumet women’s basketball team hosts Indiana University-South Bend.
