MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (Box Score) – The Purdue University Calumet men’s tennis team got its 2011-12 fall campaign off to a good start with a 7-2 victory over Prairie State College in an exhibition match on Sunday afternoon.
Matt Radencic (Schererville), who won his season opener a year ago, took down Jack Schurmann in straight sets in No. 1 singles action, 6-1, 6-2. Freshmen Jeff Stooksbury (Gary) and Cort Thompson (Lowell, Mich.) each won their collegiate debuts in impressive fashion, as Stooksbury defeated Tyler Carter (6-4, 6-0) at No. 2 singles and Thompson breezed by Nick Blink (6-0, 6-0) at No. 3 singles.
James Haworth (Crown Point) and Jaime Alvarez (Calumet City, Ill.) also tallied wins on the day with Haworth claiming a 6-2, 6-0 victory in No. 4 singles play, before Alvarez tallied a three-set win at No. 5 singles. Radencic and Thompson teamed up to notch an 8-2 win in No. 1 doubles, while Haworth and Stooksbury rounded out the Black and Gold’s victories with a 9-7 triumph in No. 2 doubles action.
Purdue Calumet will return to the court next Sunday, September 11, when it travels to Renssalaer, Ind. to face NCAA Div. II opponent St. Joseph’s College for a 2 p.m. match.
