Alumni Committed to Excellence (ACE) Awards
We are privileged each year to be able to honor one outstanding alumni from the department. These alumni are recognized at a University-wide function sponsored by the Purdue Alumni Association-Calumet. Our two most recent alumni honorees are Mr. Tony Hobson and Ms. Maria Razumich-Zec.
Douglas J. Ollie – Outstanding Alumni for 2008 (Marketing major)
This PUC graduate is resourceful e-retail leader with extensive multi-channel, marketing, systems, supply-chain and logistics experience for an industry leading retailer. For the past decade he’s driven complex projects and solutions with an emphasis on the B2C customer experience. He is currently the Director of Logistics Services, Internet & Catalog Division for Sears Holdings Corporation where he started his career 22 years ago. Today he’s responsible for leading multi-channel strategic vision and operations of the B2C logistics network.
Douglas earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing Management, Purdue University Calumet in 1989; an M.B.A. Marketing & Operations Management, Northern Illinois University 1996; and a Masters of Project Management, The George Washington University 2004. In addition he received Project Management Profession Certification (PMP) in 2005.

“Two things really stand out about my PUC experience. The first is the mentoring atmosphere created by the professors. They took a personal interest in getting each student to achieve their full potential. The second is the diverse background of the students at PUC, which challenges students to seek and understand new perspectives.”
Tony F. Hobson – Outstanding Alumni for 2007 (HR major)
Tony Hobson is the proud owner of three companies; The Hobson Financial Group, Hobson & Scott Insurance Agency, and Hobson & Scott Remodeling. Tony is a Series 7, 63, 65, Life and Health licensed investment representative that has worked in the financial industry for over 10 years.
While at Purdue University Calumet, Tony served as the President for the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) Student Organization for two years, a PUC Student Ambassador, a member of Purdue University Marketing Association, a PUC/Inland Steel Intern, an avid volunteer, and a member of a special council with the Chancellor to determine future goals at Purdue Calumet.
Tony’s additional accomplishments include: ongoing presenter for “Teach Your Children to Save” and “Credit Presentations”, Lions Club Member and, Guest Lecturer for local colleges on resumes and interviewing. Tony believes his greatest accomplishment is the fact that at age 26 he started his first corporation and before the age of 30 has three businesses and is his own boss.

“Purdue University Calumet helped to prepare me for a future of success by providing an educational foundation that included both real life experiences and theoretical knowledge. The professors and staff at PUC helped me throughout many aspects of my life in and out of the classroom. I learned compassion for those in need by volunteering at a soup kitchen with SHRM under the direction of Dr. John Lucas. I learned about the world of Marketing and Finance through professors like Hugh Daubek and Paul McGrath. I couldn’t name all of the staff that helped me throughout my career as a student, but PUC as a whole has helped to shape me as the businessman and person that I am today.”

Ms. Maria Razumich-Zec - Outstanding Alumni for 2006 (Marketing major)
Maria Razumich-Zec is Regional Vice President-USA East Coast, for the Peninsula Hotels. She oversees hotel operations for Peninsula Hotels located in Chicago and New York. Peninsula Hotels is owned and managed by The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited (HSH). Razumich-Zec joined The Peninsula Chicago in March 2002, shortly after the opening of the 339-room property, located at 108 East Superior Street at North Michigan Avenue.
Razumich-Zec’s hotel experience throughout the United States makes her a particularly valuable asset in Chicago, which is a hub for domestic and international business and leisure travelers. She also brings to the position considerable knowledge of five-star culture and what it represents to the hotel’s customers.
In her position, Razumich-Zec is at the helm of The Peninsula Hotels’ fourth hotel in the United States, following a four-year term as Managing Director of The New York Palace hotel. Under her leadership, the hotel attained the AAA Five Diamond Award and the Mobil Five Star Award.
Prior to joining The New York Palace Hotel in 1994, where she served as Managing Director and Hotel Manager for four years respectively, Razumich-Zec held the position of Resident Manager at The Palmer House Hilton in Chicago. Her earlier career spanned the Chicago and New York markets and included appointments at The Chicago Hilton and Towers, The Waldorf Astoria in New York and The Hilton at Short Hills, a AAA Five-Diamond rated hotel.
Under her leadership, The Peninsula Chicago has achieved the Mobil Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond awards (for four consecutive years) and the hotel was recently named The Top Hotel in the U.S. by Zagat (for three consecutive years), the Number One Hotel in North
America by Travel + Leisure. Leaders magazine named Razumich-Zec one of the ‘Top 10 Hoteliers’ and has inducted her into the ‘Hotelier’s Hall of Achievement.’ Razumich-Zec was named ‘Hotelier of the Year’ for the State of Illinois by the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association for 2004.
Razumich-Zec’s experience as a leader and mentor in the hospitality industry has proven to be a valuable asset to her numerous charitable and philanthropic affiliations. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for The Waterbor Burn and Cancer Foundation, The Nic Zec Foundation for Lupus, Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau, Greater North Michigan Avenue Association, Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association. Razumich-Zec is on the Board of Trustees for the Joan W. and Irving B. Harris Theatre for Music and Dance and is a member of The Economic Club and The Executives’ Club of Chicago.
Razumich-Zec was invited to be a member of The Chicago Network, an organization of professional women in Chicago who have reached the highest echelons of business, the arts, government, the professions and academia. Razumich-Zec is a member of the Waldorf=Astoria Distinguished Alumni, the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) and the Confrerie de la Chaine des Rotisseurs.
A native of Chicago, Razumich-Zec holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University, with a major in Business Management with a focus on Marketing, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in French.
