Every year, the Northwest Indiana Times Newspaper recognizes young professionals in the region for their success, leadership and community commitment. Mr. Irving clearly exemplifies all these characteristics and more. Mr. Irving is currently an attorney for the State Farm Litigation Counsel.  In his previous position, Deputy Prosecutor for Lake County, Indiana, Mr. Irving prosecuted defendants for child abuse and neglect. After taking a foster parent class with his mother, Mr. Irving became a foster parent in 2006 and has provided a home to over 30 children over the last four years.

Rightfully deserving, Mr. Irving has received various awards including the 2007 Foster Parent of the Year and the Honorable Viola J. Taliaferro’s Award, as well as recognition by the Indianapolis Colts, the Indiana General Assembly, and the President of the United States.  He has also been featured on the Star Jones television show and on the back cover of State Farm Red International Magazine.  Mr. Irving was also awarded the Outstanding Student award in MBAE group 10 by nominations from his Purdue University Calumet faculty members.

Curt Geissler worked for Inland Steel Company as a staff accountant and progressed through various assignments throughout his 12 years of service before becoming the Controller for the ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor plant.  He is responsible for Indiana Harbor including the Continuous Cold Rolling facility in New Carlisle, IN, Minorca Iron Ore operation in Virginia, MN as well as the South Chicago Indiana Harbor Railroad in Chicago, IL.  He also currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Regional Federal Credit Union based in Hammond, IN.

Curt earned a bachelor’s degree in business with a major in accounting from Indiana University Northwest and Master of Business Administration degree from Purdue Calumet in 2001.

Curt’s most valued Purdue Calumet experience:
 “The cohort portion of the program was invaluable as this is where a majority of the learning takes place. The instructors can present and explain the information to you but the true learning is when you look at the information from other people’s perspectives.  I had always looked at every issue from a bottom line financial perspective while my fellow classmates opened my eyes to other ways of looking at problems or issues.  It was a great experience!”

 Curt’s advice to current Purdue Calumet students:
 “Be engaged and improve yourself.  The education that you receive is proportional to the amount of effort you put in.  It’s not about getting your degree, it’s about learning, and it’s about being a better person than you were before you started.”
