Experiential Learning: A Best Practice Handbook for Educators and Trainers
Colin Beard and John P. Wilson
PUC Library Call No. BF 318.5 B43 2006
Colin Beard is a senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University. John P. Wilson has worked as a consultant in various industries, and is also a researcher at the University of Sheffield.
This handbook is the product of theory and experience. It updates and expands their earlier book – The Power of Experiential Learning – published in 2002. The authors present a new conceptual framework called the combination lock model. They trace the historical and philosophical roots of the idea of learning through experience. Particularly interesting is the comparison in chapter 2 “Exploring Experiential Learning” of various process models from the fields of education, psychology and quality management: “Dewey’s learning process,” “Lewin’s feedback process,” “Kolb’s experiential learning cycle,” “Honey and Mumford’s learning styles,” “Shewhart/Deming cycle of continuous improvement.”
Unfortunately, early in the book the authors slip when they state that John Dewey “wrote extensively on the subject of experience, and also gave us a well-known library classification system.” (p. 16) While the philosopher John Dewey did write much about education and experience, he was not the same person as, or even related to, Melvil Dewey – the man who invented the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
The book, published by Kogan Page, makes nice use of charts, figures and summary captions. There are 16 pages of references, 3 pages of guides to further reading, and an index.
