I am delighted and honored to welcome you to the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the largest academic unit of Purdue University Calumet. In addition to serving as the academic home of over 30 programs in the humanities, social sciences, and multidisciplinary studies, LASS provides most of the general education courses that cultivate the communication, reasoning, and analytical skills you will need to succeed in your chosen academic field and your career.
As a student in LASS you will acquire a broad understanding of human culture and society as you prepare for a life and a career characterized by creativity, community engagement, and personal fulfillment. You will work with outstanding teachers who are also engaged in
research and scholarship in their fields. For example, you will have the opportunity to study and research such wide-ranging topics as Gender and Politics in Ancient Italy, Mapping of Chinese Religions, Environmental Science Writing, the Psychology of Climate Change, Apocalyptic Film Heroes, and Writing in Virtual Worlds. You will be mentored by faculty to present your research at scholarly conferences, including our own Clement S. Stacy Undergraduate Research Conference, which attracts students from across the Midwest to showcase the results of their research in the humanities and social sciences.
LASS programs also offer you a range of unique opportunities beyond the classroom which will enhance your learning experience. These include study abroad programs, participation in honors societies, faculty-student collaborative research, internships, service learning, theatre productions, our international films series, and many more possibilities. I also encourage you to venture out into the community to learn about and contribute to the many social, artistic, and cultural programs and events in Hammond and Northwest Indiana.
Students graduating with degrees in the liberal arts and social sciences go on to careers in a wide range of fields, including: Public Relations … Counseling … Advertising … International Relations … Law … Publishing … Radio and Television … Human Relations … Professional Writing … Graphic Arts … Law Enforcement … Public Policy … and many, many others.
