Alumni Class Notes

1972
Thomas Mavronicles (Physical Education, Health and Safety Recreation) BS, was elected President of the Purdue Alumni Calumet (PAC) board. Tom also earned his MS in 1973 Physical Education, Health and Recreation from Purdue University, a Certificate in Professional Supervision in 1986 from PUC and National Certification as a Certified Safety Professional from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals in 1990.

1983
George Kopanakis (Building Construction Tech) BS, AS 1981 Architectural Tech, AAS 1981 Supervision, was elected Vice President of the Purdue Alumni Calumet (PAC) board. George is a project manager for Sargent & Lundy in Chicago.

1984
Mary C. Shields, (Nursing) BS, AS 1981 and MS 1989 (Nursing) was elected Secretary to Purdue Alumni Calumet (PAC). Mary is the Administrator of the Community Cancer Research Foundation in Munster.

1987
Blanca L. Aranda, (Bus Admin & Mgmt) BS, was elected to the Purdue Alumni Calumet (PAC) board and elected as Treasurer for the board.

1994
Lisa Daugherty 1989 (Communications) BA, 1994 (Communications) MA, appointed to the position of corporate director of classified sales for Lee Enterprises Inc. In the newly created role, Daugherty will direct Lee’s existing and emerging Lee-wide sales initiatives. Daugherty will continue to be the director of advertising for The Times and will assume responsibilities as general manager of the Times’ Crown Point office.

1996
Raquel Sterczek, 1996 (Elementary Education) BA. After teaching for fourteen years, I created my own classroom website (www.missrsterczek.com). It is my way of giving back to the education profession.

1997 and 1998
Damian Rico, 1997 (Communications) BA, 1998 (Psychology) BA, recently joined The Times Media Co. as Community Online Director. Rico will direct content development of its community.com websites.

2004
Sheryl Corey, (Management) MBA, joined Purdue Calumet’s Office of Advancement staff as Assistant Director of Advancement where she is responsible for university events and Purdue Alumni Calumet membership development.

2009
Shontrai D. Irving, (Management) MBA received the Outstanding Young Lawyer Award from the Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA). Irving, of Gary, IN is an attorney for the State Farm Litigation Counsel. Shontrai became a foster parent to four siblings ranging in age from two to eight, who remain in his care today. He has provided his home to more than 20 young children to date. For his commitment to children Shontrai was named Indiana’s 2007 Foster Parent of the Year by the Indiana Foster Care Adoption Association.
