Coach named to lead new cross country teams
Purdue Calumet continues to move forward with its athletic expansion plan, appointing Matt Bliss as the program’s inaugural men’s and women’s cross country coach. The Peregrines’ harriers will begin intercollegiate competition next fall.
Bliss, a Yorktown, Ind. native, comes to Purdue Calumet after having served previously on the Griffith High School track and field coaching staff.
“We are pleased that Matt has agreed to serve as the first head coach of our men’s and women’s cross country teams,” Athletics Director Robert Bunnell said. “He has an excellent reputation in the area and very strong competitive running experience running at a high level. We feel the future of our program will be in good hands.”
Bliss was an all-state performer at Yorktown High School, before continuing his running career at Ball State University. During his time with Cardinals, he garnered NCAA All-America and All-District honors while also being named an All-Mid-American Conference selection in cross country and track and field.
“I’m very excited to join the Purdue Calumet athletic family,” Bliss said. “This is a great opportunity to build a program from the ground up, and I feel that with the talent in this region we can create a strong tradition from the onset.”
