Email Appearing to Come from the IRS

Several staff members have received an email that has the appearance of being sent from the IRS. The email attempts to trick the recipient into thinking there is a tax issue to infect their computer or supply personal information.  The link in the message contains an executable file that will attempt to extract personal information from the victim’s computer.

This email is part of a scam that began in 2009 and was not sent by the IRS and is a fraudulent attempt to obtain personal information from consumers. The IRS *NEVER* initiates taxpayer communications through email. Consumers should NOT access the links provided within the body of the email and should NOT under any circumstances provide any personal information through this media.

If you have any questions please contact James R. Pardonek, Assistant Director for Information Security and Assurance, at (219)989-2745 or e-mail pardonjr@purduecal.edu.
