Health and Safety Process Outline

This is a bubble chart visually outlining the Health and Safety inspection process.

Each month, Health and Safety Inspections are conducted for each room in the University Village. Health and Safety Inspections consist of a short, visual check of each suite for issues that may impact the general health and safety of the University Village and its residents.

One week prior to inspections, flyers will be posted on each suite door to notify residents of the time and date of the coming inspections. On the date of inspections, Resident Assistants will check each suite for health and safety issues, maintenance concerns, and policy violations.

In the event that a health and safety issue is discovered, Resident Assistants will document the issue and leave an inspection slip for residents notifying them of what should be fixed. A re-inspection will be scheduled for this suite, and residents of the suite will have to correct the issue before re-inspections.

During re-inspections a Graduate Assistant will check the suite to ensure that any issues reported by Resident Assistants have been corrected. If issues remain unsolved, residents will be documented for failing re-inspections. Residents will then have an opportunity to take a one-hour cleaning class instead of receiving fines for failing their re-inspections. (Each resident can only take the cleaning class once each academic year.)

If the resident failed Health and Safety Inspections, failed re-inspections, and did not attend a cleaning class, the resident will be referred to the Resident Conduct Process. At this point, a hearing will be conducted by a conduct officer at the University Village. If the resident is found responsible, fines will be issued as follows: First Offense is $100.00, Second Offense is $200.00, Third Offense is $300.00. Further offenses may include other conduct sanctions up to and including separation from housing. For a full list of health and safety violations, please visit our page on Health and Safety Standards.

In the event that a maintenance issue is discovered, Resident Assistants will document the issue and report it to maintenance/facilities staff at the University Village. A member of UV facilities will come by at their earliest convenience to repair the issue.

In the event that a policy violation is discovered, Resident Assistants will document the issue and report it to the appropriate housing staff. Certain policy violations will require further attention from Graduate Assistants, Administrative Staff, or PUCPD. In addition, residents in violation of University Village policies will be referred to the Resident Conduct Process. A hearing will be scheduled with a conduct officer at the University Village and if the resident is found responsible for the policy violation, fines may be applied to a resident’s student account. For a full list of University Village policies, please refer to the Resident Handbook.
