¡Bienvenidos!
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers undergraduate programs leading to the Associate of Arts degree, the Bachelor of Arts degree in French and Spanish, and a Certificate in Spanish translation. Courses are offered during the day and evening hours to accommodate students on a full-time or part-time basis.
The Purpose of the Department
Knowledge of languages and cultures is vital in our multicultural society. The department views learning a foreign language and its culture as a way to foster international understanding in an interdependent world. Students gain an understanding of the contemporary society of the target language through its literature and its civilization. This goal is achieved through the use of sources such as films, the Internet, television and radio broadcasts, foreign press, and community interaction.
Our language programs develop student abilities in attentive listening, proficient speaking, accurate writing, critical reading, and cross-cultural understanding. Our graduates have pursued careers in such divers areas as: translation, foreign service, museum work, law, education, the ministry, medicine, social work, banking, public relations, import/export, management, and marketing.
Media Resources
Language learning is supported by the International Media Center. The IMC is a multimedia lab providing the equipment and environment to improve foreign language skills and to promote the languages and cultures of many countries. Course-specific materials and other general language reference materials including software, music CDs, and foreign films on VHS and DVD are available for student use while in the lab – material may not be checked out.
Study Abroad Opportunities
The department sponsors summer study programs in Spain and France, and supports students who may participate in a variety of overseas travel seminars that may carry department credit. For information on receiving department credit via traveling abroad, please see your academic advisor who will work with the FLL department. The Department encourages students to incorporate an international experience in their course of study.
Experiential Learning
Purdue University Calumet is one of a select few institutions in the country to adopt Experiential Learning (EXL) as a graduation requirement that is designed to comply with the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE) standards. This is hands-on learning with opportunities to travel, volunteer, work or create. EXL builds your resume and your confidence while preparing you to face the world challenges.
