Students are readmitted to the University after they have completed their stop out period, which is a mandatory separation from the University for students whose GPA has dropped below the required index. In order for students to be readmitted they must complete their stop out period, fill out a readmission application, and pay a $100 readmission fee.

The readmission application process is administered by the Office of the Dean of Students and is now available on-line with step-by-step instructions so students understand each phase in the process. Students can also make an appointment to speak with a Readmit Specialist by calling 219.989.4141 if they need more detailed information or help.

Students must be aware that there is a deadline for submitting the readmission application. If that deadline is missed, the student, though s/he may have completed the stop out period, will not be readmitted, and cannot register for classes. This course of action is not taken to be punitive, but is meant as an educational tool for the vulnerable student to understand the importance of meeting deadlines. Often these students have had some difficulties with setting the proper boundaries and priorities for academic success.

It is suggested that students who are coming back from academic drop, register for classes before the class begins. It is helpful for the student to be in the classroom on the first day so he/she can get the syllabus and understand the expectations of the instructor. When students miss the first week or two of class, they have already missed pertinent information to help them succeed in that class.

During New Student Orientation and the Freshman Year Experience courses, students are informed that they must keep their grades up or they can be in peril of academic drop. And if they do find themselves on academic probation, it is the time to take stock and make some changes. Being on academic probation is a warning sign that something has gone wrong and changes need to be made. Taking corrective courses of action can get the student back on track.

Students can find more information about the on-line readmission process at the Dean of Students Website at www.purduecal.edu/deanofstudents/ readmit.

The Purdue system has a revised Student Code of Conduct. West Lafayette was the first to revise their code and the regional campuses adapted it to their campus culture. The Student Code of Conduct was last revised in 1973.

Some of the changes include:

Students will have the option of a pre-hearing interview to discuss the process, possible sanctions, and their rights, etc.

Students can now have advisors in the hearing

Students may now receive notification and decisions via email

Notice of charges and decisions can be sent to parents or guardians if the student is a dependent by age as defined by the IRS

Several violations were added to the codes:

Copyright infringement – unauthorized media downloading and unauthorized public showings of licensed media

Use, possession or distribution of narcotics, dangerous drugs, controlled substances, misuse of prescription drugs

Disruption of a class or lab to the extent that the behavior impedes and/or interferes with teaching and learning

The most significant change is the creation of three separate boards – the Community Standards Board (CSB), the Campus Appeals Board (CAB) and the Involuntary Withdrawal Appeals Committee (IWAC). The CSB may hear the most egregious cases of Code violations at the discretion of the Student Conduct Administrator. The CAB will hear appeals for student organizations that have been disciplined and for violations of the Student Bill of Rights.

The IWAC will hear appeals for those students who have been involuntarily withdrawn from the University.

The next steps will be to train all the board members, inform the campus community of the revised code and finally implementation. Currently, Purdue University Calumet and Purdue North Central are working together to have a joint implementation date this fall.

In accordance with disability law, Purdue University Calumet (PUC) is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities. Creating an accessible environment is a collaborative process that involves the Office of Disability Resources (ODR), students, and all faculty and staff at PUC.

“What happens when I receive an accommodation letter?”

Upon receipt of a student’s accommodation letter, it would be helpful for you to make yourself available for a confidential meeting with the student to discuss arrangements for accommodations as early in the semester as possible. The student should initiate this meeting, however, faculty are encouraged to initiate the discussion in private when a student seems reluctant to do so.

It is good practice to follow the student’s lead in discussing his/her disability. Some students may be very open in their conversations, while others may be more reserved. Keep in mind that neither medical information nor the nature of the disability should be requested. Generally, the best approach is to focus conversation and questions on how to best provide the approved accommodations within the context of the course.

Always take into consideration that knowledge of a disability should be treated in a confidential manner. Identifying a student to peers or discussing a student’s disability or in the presence of others would be a violation of the student’s right to privacy.

By law, required accommodations as outlined in an ODR accommodation letter must be provided. However, you do have input in determining how accommodations should be provided in your class. An accommodation should not conflict with the essential requirements of a course or alter the fundamental nature of a program. ODR staff can serve as a resource if you have questions.

Please be aware that additional services you choose to provide, not listed in the letter, is solely at your discretion and not considered an approved accommodation from the ODR.

For more information, please contact the Office of Disability Resources at (219) 989-2455; TTY: (219) 989-2454 or e-mail at odr@purduecal.edu.

Illegal downloading, uploading or sharing of media is becoming such a huge problem for the entertainment industry that they have hired full time staff to monitor the activity in an effort to stop it. Peer-to-peer networks are often times used to illegally share music, videos, and images. Individuals engaged in the behavior assume several risks:

Personal risks: compromising one’s computer by making it vulnerable to viruses and spam as well as being more susceptible to identity theft.

Legal risks: risking lawsuits and criminal prosecution under Federal Law and the possibility of fines ranging from $200 to $150,000.

Disciplinary risks: violating the Code of Student Conduct.

When students illegally download media using the PUC Network:

Network Administrators are contacted by outside sources such as the Recording Industry Association of America or Fox.

The Network Administrator then disables the student’s access to the PUC Network. Because copyright infringement is a direct violation of Section B-2a of the Regulations Governing Student Conduct, the information is then forwarded to the Office of the Dean of Students.

The Office of the Dean of Students then notifies the student of a Disciplinary Hearing with a Student Conduct Administrator.

If found responsible, the student is asked to sign a contract stating that he/she will remove the infringed material and discontinue all infringing activity.

The student’s access will be enabled only after he/she has met with a Student Conduct Administrator. Second offenses could result in more stringent sanctions not only by the University but by the party reporting the infringement.

For more information regarding copyright infringement including a listing of legal websites from which to download music, TV, and movies go to www.campusdownloading.com.

Operation Rescue will be held at the Indiana National Guard Center, 2530 E. 173rd Street, Hammond, IN. It will bring together representatives from other Northwest Indiana colleges and universities as well as community agencies and businesses that provide services to assist veterans and enlisted students in transitioning back into the community. This event is free and open to the public and will feature food, entertainment, music, and fun!

One of the measures that FBBP uses to determine effectiveness and success is when students achieve their academic goals. FBBP is proud to announce that for the 2010- 2011 academic year, twenty-two (22) Purdue Calumet veterans and student service members were awarded degrees during Purdue Calumet’s 61st and 62nd Commencement Ceremonies: seventeen (17) bachelor’s; three (3) master’s and two (2) associate degrees. Of the seventeen (17) students awarded the bachelor’s degree, two (2) will begin graduate study at Purdue Calumet in the fall of 2011.

For more information about FBBP, please visit room 343 of the Student Union and Library Building or call 219.989.2727. The staff will be waiting: “No Veteran or Student Service Member Left Behind!”

The ISASP’s goal is to cultivate the development of student-athletes as they balance academics with athletics while pursuing a postsecondary and/or graduate degree. A number of services, such as academic monitoring, referral services, webinars, academic advising and academic/personal development workshops are employed within the ISASP to aid student-athletes in successfully pursuing their academic goals. In addition to providing specific and targeted services to studentathletes the ISASP strongly encourages student-athletes to become familiar with, and to utilize, all of the services and programs offered on PUC’s campus.

The primary tool used for academic monitoring is Progress Report Forms. Each semester Progress Report Forms are circulated to the Purdue Calumet faculty in four-week intervals. These forms provide faculty with an opportunity to report on a student-athlete’s class participation, class assignments, current grade, and use of faculty office hours. It also provides faculty with an opportunity to briefly evaluate the student-athlete’s overall performance. Student-athletes who receive a 2.0 or below are encouraged to meet with the ISASP advisor to develop programming which will help the student-athlete to receive the highest grade possible in the respective course. This programming may include faculty-student conferences, faculty-student-ISASP advisor conferences, tutorial assistance, and/or referral services.

Throughout the fall, spring and summer semesters, a series of academic and personal development workshops and webinars will be offered to student-athletes on a voluntary basis. These workshops will cover topics such as study skills, note taking, time management, stress management, exam preparation, graduate school preparation, money management, and preparation for life after athletics.

That’s the motto that Purdue University Calumet intramural director Matt Dudzik has stressed to the university’s everexpanding student population over the past decade. Texting Bees, Intramural Gardening and Rock, Paper, Scissors are just a few of the unique PUC intramural contests that have found their way into an expansive intramural program that annually sponsors over 40 activities.

The Munster resident and Purdue Calumet alum got his start in intramurals in 2001 when he helped organize a sand volleyball tournament to help raise funds as a member of the school’s Fitness Club. The success of that event opened a new door for him, as former Assistant Vice Chancellor of Health, Recreation & Sports Rob Jensen loved the idea of creating new ways to keep students involved on campus and eventually hired him as a student worker to head up the initiative.

No one could have guessed the direction that the program has taken since. “It started out with Fitness Center student worker Peter Fagan and me coming up with games that we enjoyed playing and then laying out the rules for those sports,” said Dudzik. “Basketball and volleyball were already up and running, so we added racquetball and flag football to the schedule.”

From those humble beginnings has emerged Dudzik’s brainchild, which aims at opening up competitive opportunities on campus to all types of students and often leads to new friendships and interests. “It has really started to create a family atmosphere on campus,” Dudzik said. “That’s why I was so excited to do this. I wanted to provide Purdue Calumet students with opportunities to get involved on campus and help them get the most of their college experience.”

Nearly a decade after his first taste of running tournaments at PUC, the “Mad Scientist of Intramurals” is still in the process of developing new ways to offer intramural activities to a wide range of interests. Could Intramural Social Protesting or the marketing initiative “Battle of the Brands” work their way onto the Purdue Calumet intramural schedule? Tune in to the Intramural website (www.purduecal.edu/intramurals) to find your game.
