First Friday Wordsmiths (FFW), a creative writing organization, is open to all Purdue Calumet campus members.

First Friday Wordsmiths (FFW), a creative writing organization, is open to all Purdue Calumet campus members. Dedicated to fostering the region’s literary community, FFW workshops creative texts (prose and poetry), networks about publishing opportunities, hosts and supports literary events on and off campus, attends writing conferences and festivals across the USA, produces compilations of group work, and completes creative writing-based service projects in partnership with not-for-profit groups.

In its original incarnation, FFW was First Friday Poets, led by Charlie Tinkham, former PUC creative writing professor and local poetry legend. It began anew in Fall 2007.

Activity highlights include:

Attendance at the Split This Rock Poetry Festival in Washington, D.C.; the NonfictioNow Conference at University of Iowa, and the Association of Writers and Writing Programs conference

Leadership of annual intensive creative writing workshops for K-12 student members of not-for-profit organization, Books, Brushes and Bands for Education

Production of Splendid Corpse, a spoken word CD

Celebration of April as National Poetry Month via open mics, poetry readings, and guest speakers

FFW meets the first Friday of each month year round. Our core philosophy is that our only limitation is the imagination of those who attend; therefore, we are boundless. To join our mailing list or inquire about FFW, please email: firstfridaywordsmiths@gmail.com
