Stuart Dybek is the 2013 Stark-Tinkham keynote speaker

We’re very fortunate to have Stuart Dybek agree to give the keynote address at the Stark-Tinkham event on September 20. As you can see from his bio (http://www.poetryfoundation.org/bio/stuart-dybek), he has a very significant reputation in contemporary American fiction and poetry. He received a MacArthur “genius grant” in 2007. More information will be coming soon.

Felicia Dieguez is new Graduate Student Representative

With the involvement of many English and Philosophy department faculty, the One Book One University common reading program has chosen The Shallows: What the Internet is doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr as its 2013-14 book. More information about the book and the One Book One University program is available on the Center for Student Achievement website. We expect this fascinating book to prompt some vigorous and stimulating discussion all throughout the next academic year.

English 10500 EXL Conference to be held May 3 (12-2pm)

The second annual English 10500 Experiential Learning Conference will be held Friday, May 3 from 12-2 in CLO 151. To participate in this conference, students submitted proposals based on their experiential learning projects completed in English 10500. The top seven student groups will present their projects.

The English Lecture Series hosts its first Spring Workshop

On Saturday, April 13 the English Lecture Series, sponsored by the Graduate Program in English at Purdue Calumet, hosted its first Spring Workshop. Connie Mick from Notre Dame was joined by Beth Hewett and teachers from across the area to discuss the challenges and possibilities of the online teaching of writing. More information about the annual English Lecture Series will be coming soon.

Update on First Friday Wordsmiths

First Friday Wordsmiths (FFW), a creative writing organization, is open to all Purdue Calumet campus members. Dedicated to fostering the region’s literary community, FFW workshops creative texts (prose and poetry), networks about publishing opportunities, hosts and supports literary events on and off campus, attends writing conferences and festivals across the USA, produces compilations of group work, and completes creative writing-based service projects in partnership with not-for-profit groups.

In its original incarnation, FFW was First Friday Poets, led by Charlie Tinkham, former PUC creative writing professor and local poetry legend. It began anew in Fall 2007.

Activity highlights include:

Attendance at the Split This Rock Poetry Festival in Washington, D.C.; the NonfictioNow Conference at University of Iowa, and the Association of Writers and Writing Programs conference
Leadership of annual intensive creative writing workshops for K-12 student members of not-for-profit organization, Books, Brushes and Bands for Education
Production of Splendid Corpse, a spoken word CD
Celebration of April as National Poetry Month via open mics, poetry readings, and guest speakers
