Campus Turbine Simulation

INTRODUCTION

Campus TurbineAs part of efforts in wind  energy education, Purdue University Calumet will be installing a wind Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) on the Classroom Office Building (CLO) to generate electricity and provide students with a functional tool for learning the concepts associated with wind energy.

OBJECTIVE

  • To determine optimal placement of a VAWT on the roof of Purdue University Calumet’s CLO Building.
  • To aid in the decision of an appropriate VAWT model.

RESULTS

Simulation and Visualization both played a role in the VAWT project. Wind field simulations were developed to determine optimal location on the roof of the Classroom Office Building. Additionally, visualizations were developed showing various turbines operating at a variety of wind speeds to help determine the turbine that would be purchased.
