Example Projects:
The Gary/Chicago International Airport is planning an expansion to extend the main runway and increase capabilities of the airport. A partnership has been formed between the City of Gary and Purdue University Calumet for stimulating economic planning and development of the city. Visualization of the Gary Airport runway extension is the first project resulting from the partnership.
Traffic Simulation and Visualization
The purpose of this study is to show how economic measures of benefits and costs can be improved if visualization tools and technologies are used in addition to standard economic models of estimating benefits and costs. By utilizing the visualization and simulator resources at Purdue University and through collaboration with the Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS) at Purdue Calumet, this study will contribute to the general body of knowledge of how visually enhanced applications can enrich the existing transportation system database to effectively measure benefits and costs associated with improvement in freight transportation.
Gary University Park Development![]()
Purdue University Calumet and the City of Gary have partnered to apply GIS simulation and 3D Visualilzation for economic development and city planning of the Univeristy Park area. The CIVS research center uniquely integrates advanced simulation and visualization technology for analyzing data, parcel and zone planning, and for the support final implementation the city’s key development areas.
Regional Development Authority Visualization
Using a fusion of audio/video footage and computer-generated 3D renders, CIVS was tasked with creating and compiling a 7 minute informational video demonstrating how RDA-funded projects have had a significant impact on their surrounding communities, and also how highly polluted and unusable lands have been restored and nurtured into lush, green habitats and recreational areas. Segments of the video were shot on location at the completed project sites, whereas the projects still under construction were computer generated and modeled using 3D software to visualize the completed result and how it will impact the community.
