Now, as a professor of mechanical engineering, director for engineering outreach and director for the Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS) at Purdue Calumet, she does this on many levels and in many roles. Her focus as an educator, as a researcher and as an integral part of CIVS is to solve real-world problems. In each of her roles, Zhou does just that through leading, educating and collaborating with students, faculty, staff and members of external organizations and industries.

January 17, 2013A quick and economical way to solve industrial problems is Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which has become widely accepted in many industries. In CFD modeling, a three-dimensional (3D) computer ‘model’ of process equipment, such as a boiler or furnace, is built from digital drawings of the plant, and the process is simulated using fundamental equations for fluid flow, combustion and heat transfer.

May 7, 2012On Friday, 27 April, and Tuesday, 1 May, the Mission Ocean program was inaugurated in the Cold War Gallery, at the National Navy Museum in Washington DC. One hundred-thirty students from two Prince William County schools were the first children to conduct undersea exploration missions, employing networked computers to operate their research submarine, while observing their sub’s search on a 3D video display. Investigating the continental shelf area in the Aleutian Islands, students used ocean temperature and sulfur dioxide measurements to locate an actively erupting volcano in the virtual Education Center at the Cold War Gallery, part of the National Navy Museum in Washington, D.C.

A Purdue University Calumet center, specializing in 3-D visualization and simulation research methods, is hoping to expand its business partnerships. The Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation helps businesses troubleshoot problems through the creation of virtual models and tools. Purdue University Calumet is working to enhance the local profile of a campus center that has a global reputation for leading research projects that have saved companies millions of dollars. At a breakfast presentation Wednesday, university personnel and representatives from companies in the region and abroad shared success stories and made a marketing pitch for the school’s Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation. The multidisciplinary center uses simulation techniques with 3-D visualization and virtual reality technologies. December 13, 2010AISI Board members were taken on an immersive 3-dimensional simulated tour of a virtual blast furnace thanks to Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modeling technology developed by Purdue University Calumet under an ongoing AISI/Department of Energy (DOE) research grant. Donning 3-D glasses, viewers experience the Advanced Simulation and Virtual Reality Visualization for Steel Manufacturing exhibit by getting “inside” structures—including a blast furnace— to gain a better understand of the complex phenomena involved in the processes.

November 22, 2010The Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST) Midwest Chapter sponsored a one-day seminar at Purdue University Calumet on November 10th, 2010. The event was designed to reach high school juniors who have the potential and interest to pursue a college degree in the field of engineering. The AIST invited Lake and Porter County schools to participate in this one-day program.
