Alverno Clinical Laboratories utilizes 3D visualization for new Microbiology Innovation Center

Alverno Clinical Laboratories is working with the Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS) and Professor W. T. Evert Ting from the Purdue Calumet Biology department to develop an interactive 3D microbiology lab. Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Inc. has named Alverno as its Microbiology Innovation Center for the United States. Alverno will be installing new automation modules in their microbiology lab including Setup, Copan WASP®: Walk-Away Specimen Processors, Smart Incubators, and Mass Spectrum MALDI-TOF.

CIVS is creating a 3D virtual reality model to help optimize the process and work flow of the lab. Alverno visited CIVS for interactive planning sessions to move around equipment and experiment with different design layouts in 3D and virtual reality. The optimized lab design will also be used as part of a virtual tour that is being developed collaboratively by CIVS and Interim Biology Department Head, W. T. Evert Ting. The virtual tour will be  unveiled at Alverno’s Innovators Café event held later this summer.
