Dr. Chenn Zhou, our multi-talented Professor of Engineering serves as Director for the Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation, along with her additional responsibilities as Director for Engineering Outreach and Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies.  ―We have three missions that you can summarize in three key words: innovation, application and education. We train students on real world problems and help (businesses) to improve their processes. Basically, we create a virtual environment.
The 6,300-square-foot multi-disciplinary research center houses simulation and visualization laboratories, a 3-D virtual classroom, conference rooms and more.

Since its inception in 2009, CIVS has helped industry partners save more than $30 million in production and operating costs. It has assisted some of the region’s largest employers, ArcelorMittal, U. S. Steel Canada, and NIPSCO.  Purdue students tackle projects under the supervision of professors and staff.  ―They’re not just working in the lab, Zhou emphasizes. ―They interact with collaborators. They go out in the field. U.S. Steel Canada partnered with Purdue Calumet and CIVS to do research on their company.

Since working with them, they no longer inject cold oxygen through the lance.  Because of this, they save approximate $8.5 million a year. ArcelorMittal’s East Chicago laboratory – which services plants in the United States, Mexico, Brazil and Canada – has collaborated with CIVS on several projects that led to significant process improvements.  During their research they found that they could save upwards of $20 million by modifying their equipment instead of purchasing new equipment. NIPSCO’s Bailly Generating Station in Chesterton partnered with CIVS to increase the efficiency of a coal-fired power unit. Zhou asserts that CIVS can attract new companies to the region and help existing companies thrive.
