Why study Chemistry and Physics

Why Study Chemistry?

  • Chemical research has led to the discovery and development of new and improved synthetic fibers, paints, adhesives, drugs, cosmetics, electronic components, lubricants, and thousands of other products.
  • Research on the chemistry of living things spurs advances in medicine, agriculture, forensic science, food processing, and other fields.
  • Faculty in our department have a wide breadth of experience in a wide range of sub-disciplines within chemistry and physics, and many are actively engaged in research projects with faculty and collaborators at other universities, laboratories, including Fermilab and Argonne, and several observatories.
  • You like being challenged; want to explore research opportunities that empower students to analyze problems and synthesize solutions; and have a desire to make things better!

Why Study Physics?

  • Physics explores and identifies the basic principles governing the structure and behavior of matter, the generation and transfer of energy, and the interaction of matter and energy. Physics also attempts to discover and explain laws describing the forces of nature, such as gravity, electromagnetism, and nuclear interactions.
  • Physical laws and theories are applied to problems in nuclear energy, electronics, optics, materials, communications, aerospace technology, navigation equipment, astronomy, and medical instrumentation.
  • Our faculty is engaged in research in experimental, high-energy physics at prominent national laboratories such as Fermilab and Argonne; in the exciting field of quasar astronomy observing wavelengths across the electromagnetic spectrum; in computational models of dense star clusters using GRAPE supercomputers; and other areas.
  • You like being challenged; want to explore research opportunities that empower students to analyze problems and synthesize solutions; and have a desire to make things better!
  • Because you want to be involved in an exciting field that will provide many opportunities; that will allow you to be creative; that is personally and professionally rewarding; and one where you can make a difference!
