Since its establishment in 1982, Purdue University Calumet’s hospitality and tourism management (HTM) program has grown in enrollment and reputation, as many of our alumni are employed in positions of significant responsibility and authority.
Within the hospitality industry, management level positions offer an attractive future, while qualified individuals to fill those positions are valued and in demand.
One of the major employers of our alumni is Merrillville-based White Lodging Services Corp. White Lodging Services; its founder, Dean White; and Chairman/CEO Bruce White also have been longtime friends and supporters of our HTM program.
Recently, the White family through the Dean & Barbara White Family Foundation and the Bruce & Beth White Family Foundation made a $5 million gift to Purdue Calumet to expand and enhance our HTM program. Renamed the Purdue University Calumet White Lodging Center for Hospitality and Tourism Management, the new program center will be located within the existing Calumet Conference Center at the south end of campus and will be fully operational by fall 2011.
Beyond our deep and sincere appreciation and thanks to the Whites for this unprecedented gift—the largest received by Purdue Calumet—this extremely generous support is a testament to the manner in which industry and higher education can and do engage collaboratively to advance a greater good.
While $5 million will go a long way in transforming our HTM program into an academic jewel complete with new and expanded instructional facilities; a scholarship fund for high performing, high potential students; and two endowed professorships in hospitality finance and food & beverage management, this gift also will benefit Northwest Indiana by providing more credentialed and qualified leaders for the hospitality industry.
With nearly 20 percent of all Indiana jobs relating to the hospitality industry, The Purdue University Calumet White Lodging Center for Hospitality and Tourism Management stands to become an important component in advancing our region and state.
