Dr. Chen is an assistant professor of new media and communication in the Department of Communication and Creative Arts, Purdue University Calumet. He received his PhD from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Dr. Chen is primarily a quantitative media scholar interested in how transformation in digital technology impacts human communication. Specifically, his research interests center on human interactions in the computer-mediated environment, and he explores topics such as media and health, gender, race, and social advertising/marketing. His dissertation employs a two-study design to examine how individuals with different personalities and motivations use traditional mass media, digital technologies and face-to-face communication to gratify their social support needs.
Dr. Chen’s research received a top paper award from the Central States Communication Association. He is also an enthusiastic instructor, having taught various courses including new media and social networking, new technology and communication, introduction to media studies, and media communication in society. He received an outstanding teaching award from University of Missouri-Columbia in 2012.
