Yu-Pin Chiao and Po-Ying Chen are the first two graduates of the new 2+2 Transfer Program in partnership with Soochow University, Taipei, Taiwan. In this program, students spend the first two years of their studies at Soochow University and transfer to Purdue Calumet for their final two years. During her time at PUC, Yu-Pin became involved in a research project with Dr. Evert Ting and presented her research at the 2012 Undergraduate Research Conference. Po-Ying was also involved in research with Dr. Maria Longas. They were also student workers in the Gyte 022 prep lab and became involved in Biology Department events such as the ice cream social and graduate student picnic. When asked what was her favorite aspect of her time at PUC, Yu-Pin is emphatic “Research- it helps bring everything together.” Po-Ying adds that through research and working in the prep-lab, she learned many things not learned in lab courses, including running the autoclave, maintaining bacteria cultures, and making media. Yu-Pin plans to attend graduate school to study Food Microbiology and Po-Ying is examining several options including graduate school.
