Kevin Cessna-Buscemi is currently the Director of the National Spanish Examinations (NSE). The NSE is a set of 14 examinations assessing achievement and proficiency in Spanish which are administered each year to approximately 130,000 students in grades six (6) through twelve (12) throughout the United States.
Growing up in an Italian-American family in culturally and linguistically diverse Gary, Indiana, Kevin attributes his early interest in modern languages and cultures to his Sicilian grandfather who inspired him to learn Italian and his Uruguayan godmother who motivated him to learn Spanish. Kevin graduated from Andrean High School in Merrillville, IN. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting and a minor in Spanish from Indiana University Northwest and a Master’s Degree from Purdue University Calumet. His Spanish coursework was completed at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid through a program directed by Dr. Celestino Ruiz and offered jointly through Purdue University Calumet and the University of Madrid. Kevin’s teacher training was completed through Calumet College and the Basilian Fathers of Toronto, Canada.
Kevin’s career in world language education has spanned 28 years. During that time Kevin has taught Spanish (and at other times accounting, business, English, sociology and computer technology) at Andrean High School, Aquinas Institute (Rochester, NY), Valparaiso High School, Indiana University Northwest and Purdue University Calumet. In addition to his formal teaching, Kevin has taught Spanish to health care professionals and to pastoral ministers in Indiana and California.
Kevin has authored several articles and conducted many seminars of language teaching, learning and testing. In addition to his duties as Director of the National Spanish Examinations, Kevin also serves as the Coordinator of Curriculum Development and Assessment for the Valparaiso Community Schools in Valparaiso, IN and as Adjunct Professor of Spanish at Purdue University Calumet.
Kevin’s most valued Purdue Calumet experience:
“My father once told me: ‘I don’t care what you become; just be the best!’ Purdue University Calumet offered me an excellent opportunity within my own community to become a leader in my field. Purdue Calumet’s focus on technology and its outstanding professors, like Dr. Celestino Ruiz, Dr. Mary Leuca and Dr. Ed Vockell, are among the best anywhere in higher education today. The location of Purdue University Calumet in northwest Indiana with its proximity to Chicago afforded me the opportunity to experience my field outside of the classroom. I am grateful for my time at Purdue Calumet and highly recommend the experience to anyone.”
Kevin’s advice for current Purdue Calumet students:
“Work hard. Believe in yourself. Search for goodness, discipline and knowledge.”
