Disney and Democracy: The US Media Culture of Individualism and Consumerism

Presented by: Burton Lee Artz, PhD, Professor of Communication

Disney represents a media culture of entertainment that diverts citizens away from community and democracy and is a primary distributor of global culture. A semiotics model will be presented with case study analyses of popular Disney animated features. Presentation includes an explanation about how consumerist, non-democratic values develop through enjoyable programming content. Suggestions for public media literacy are included.
